Meghalaya, in Sanskrit, literally the ‘Abode of Clouds’, has immense potential to produce one of the finest quality tea in the world, due to its unique climatic condition coupled with virgin topsoil and pristine nature. Recognising these inherent advantages, Meghalaya’s Directorate of Horticulture took the initiatives to promote and popularise organic cultivation in the State, of which tea is one such crop which has gained popularity and successfully marketed both within the state and abroad.
MEG TEATM, an excellent organic tea produced from the department’s owned tea farms located at Umsning and Upper Shillong have been commented by renowned tea makers to be of very high quality. Manned by tea experts, the factory located at the Tea Development Centre, Umsning produce fresh and top quality tea leaves comprising of high-quality clones and seed jats.
Meghalaya tea grows in elevations of over 1,500 m. Many high-quality tea plants are cultivated at elevations of up to 1,500 m (4,900 ft.) above sea level. While at these heights the plants grow more slowly, they acquire a better flavor.

Production methods of Meg Tea are similar to those used in Darjeeling with the management strictly following top quality control. Meg Tea annual production of 5000 kgs comprised mainly of green, oolong and black teas. With growing demand, possibilities are there to produce white tea/silver tips/silver green, hand rolled teas from slow growing high quality clones, including Ambari 2, Phoobsering 312, Bannockburn 157, Bannockburn 777, Tukdah 78 etc.
Encouraged by the success of these model organic tea farms, the Department of Agriculture,
Government of Meghalaya has taken a lead role in motivating this organic movement amongst the small tea growers of the State keeping in mind that this approach can offer better sustainability to their tea plantations.
